Shari'ah-Compliant Investments

Our JSE-Listed Sukuk

Agrarius offers Africa's first R10 billion JSE-listed, Shari'ah-compliant, sustainability-linked, asset-backed Sukuk notes in JSE’s Sustainability Segment.

This provides a unique and regulated investment opportunity for investors seeking to adhere to Islamic principles. The investment focus is primarily on transactions in the social, green, and sustainable sectors providing unique access to high-quality investment opportunities in the agriculture value chain.

All transactions are based on Shari’ah law and are independently verified for sustainability in accordance with the requirements of the JSE’s sustainability segment.

What is a Sukuk?

A Sukuk is often called a Shari'ah-compliant bond. Unlike a conventional bond, which represents a debt obligation, a Sukuk represents an ownership interest in a pool of assets. The returns are generated from the profits of these underlying assets, not from interest (riba), which is prohibited under Islamic law.

How Agrarius is Compliant

Our entire investment process is overseen by our independent Shari'ah Advisory Committee.

  • Asset-Backed: Our notes are backed by tangible, real assets within the agricultural value chain, a core requirement for Shari'ah compliance.

  • Ethical Screening: All transactions are thoroughly assessed to ensure they are ethical and promote societal and environmental benefits. We prohibit investments in activities involving unethical profits, speculative risk, or haram (prohibited) goods.

  • Independent Certification: The Agrarius Note Programme has been certified as Shari'ah compliant by the 27four Shari'ah Advisory Committee.

  • Structure: We use a Sukuk al-Wakala structure, where Agrarius acts as an agent (wakeel) to invest funds on behalf of the principal (investor) into a portfolio of Shari'ah-compliant assets.

  • Mufti Mohammed Ashraf (Member of SAC)
